Josh Hokit is a problem. The undefeated Albuquerque heavyweight made that abundantly clear Sunday night, stopping Derrick Lewis with a ferocious second-round TKO to move to 10-0 and announce himself as a legitimate title contender on the biggest stage UFC has ever created.
The Setup
Lewis had gone 20-11 inside the UFC since 2014 while notching 24 knockouts — the most all-time in the promotion. He most recently fell to Waldo Cortes-Acosta in January but made this appearance on special request from President Trump himself. (Yahoo Sports)
Lewis had used the pre-fight buildup to raise questions about Hokit's quick turnaround, noting it had only been 64 days since Hokit absorbed 214 strikes — 174 of them significant — in an all-time heavyweight war against Curtis Blaydes at UFC 327. "I believe your body and your brain still need time off," Lewis said. "I believe he's making a mistake." (Yahoo Sports)
Hokit had a different view. The 28-year-old acknowledged he had to adjust his approach: "I'm going to fight him differently than I fought Blaydes, obviously. You can't take a punch like that from Derrick Lewis. I'm stupid, but I'm not that stupid." (Sportskeeda)
The Fight
Hokit jabbed early. A nice left hook connected. Lewis started firing up and punching forward, getting the crowd behind him. Hokit kept jabbing. A big shot landed from Hokit, but Lewis fired back. A nice one-two landed for Hokit. Lewis was slowing big time. (Yahoo Sports)
Hokit advanced to a side position on the ground. Lewis tried to push Hokit off with his feet. Hokit began landing more shots, then fell into half guard and elbowed. Lewis briefly tried to wall-walk but got readjusted and turned over. A cut opened on the back of Lewis' head. Hokit pummeled away as Lewis turned his back. They rolled into a Hokit mount. Hokit stood to land big punches. He went for an armbar, and Lewis just let it happen — surviving to the end of round one. (Yahoo Sports)
Round two was all over quickly. Hokit landed massive rights and uppercuts, talking to Lewis throughout. Down went Lewis after multiple shots, and it was all over. (NESN) The official time was 4:09 of round two. (Yahoo Sports)
Analysis: A Star is Born
Hokit was everything the hype suggested — fast, powerful, relentless, and composed enough to work through rounds rather than chase a wild finish. He didn't let Lewis' legendary power freeze him up. He stayed disciplined on the feet, controlled the distance, and when the opportunity came, he poured it on.
The NFL alum is a small, athletic heavyweight with big-man power. His collegiate wrestling background rounds out his game, and his appetite for showmanship gives flair to an unrefined but potent style. (CBS Sports) Tonight, he looked like the complete package.
What's Next?
In just his fourth UFC fight, Hokit has now beaten Curtis Blaydes and Derrick Lewis back-to-back. A title shot could be on the horizon (CBS Sports) — and given how loudly he's been calling out Alex Pereira all week, the heavyweight division may be about to get a lot more interesting.
